Cape Town-based Dom Koen supports BOOST&Co’s five offices across the UK and South Africa.

What do you do at BOOST&Co?

I’m the team assistant, based in Cape Town. I’m first and foremost an assistant for BOOST&Co’s partner Sonia Powar, but I also provide support for the HR and marketing departments. This includes posting Instagram Stories on BOOST&Co’s account – I love giving our followers a peek behind the scenes. I work with Sydne Brandon, our executive assistant, who’s a good friend of mine.

What was your first job?

After finishing high school, I travelled and worked overseas, mainly in the hospitality industry. I worked on super-yachts for two seasons; we were based in Monaco, but we saw all of the south of France, then the Amalfi coast of Italy, and Corsica and Sardinia. Later, I was an au pair and a personal assistant for a family in Belgium, and when I came back to Cape Town, I started an online swimwear business with a friend.

What appealed to you about BOOST&Co?

As an au pair, you don’t work with people who are the same age as you, so I was looking forward to experiencing a different environment. Having an organisational psychologist [Heather Bingham] shows how much emphasis BOOST&Co puts on making sure that all of its people are the right fit. I really liked the company’s culture, too. It seemed very cool – I was almost shocked, walking into the Cape Town office and seeing all the art on the walls!

Which item can you not work without?

Sticky notes. I like to write to-do lists and scratch things out physically. Putting a tick in a box on your computer isn’t the same.

How do you spend your leisure time?

The ocean is my playground. I spend my weekends either heading up mountains or at the beach; I’ve been surfing since I was 13 and went on an amazing surfing trip to Bali last year. I’m passionate about photography, and I also play the guitar.

Tell us more about your business.

My friend and I design swimwear and beachwear. The style is really simple; we’ve tried some fancy designs, but we always go back to the most simple cut, in earthy, neutral, timeless colours. We only do one bright colour – that’s for everybody else!

What’s on your bucket list?

I’d love to spend months sailing around Fiji, the Cook Islands and the Whitsunday Islands, surfing, diving and eating fresh fish all day. I also want to do the Pacific Crest Trail, a hike from California to Mexico, which is almost a five-month walk.

Given £100m to spend or invest, what’s the first thing you would do?

I’d go and get myself a full body massage. I’d buy some property and take my family on holiday, but I’d definitely invest a big portion of the cash.
